Is my alternator failing?

For your vehicle to dependably start up and drive without trouble, you need a healthy alternator. If your alternator malfunctions, then your battery's power reserve could go empty, consequently leaving you stranded. At Harting Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and addressing alternator problems. Come and see us at our nearby auto shop if your car is experiencing any alternator or electrical system trouble.

Warning Signs of Alternator Failure

An illuminated dashboard warning light is often the first indication of an alternator problem. This light commonly reads GEN or ALT, but in some cars will turn on in the form of a little glowing battery. Another familiar symptom of alternator trouble is a dead battery. When you install a new battery in your car, it should work reliably for three to five years, and perhaps even longer. But if your battery dies in the first year or two, then you could be dealing with a faulty alternator, unless of course you forgot to turn off your headlights.

A malfunctioning alternator can lead to electrical accessory problems. In modern vehicles, computers are commonly able to determine which electrical accessories should have their power supply diminished when alternator trouble is detected. This preserves power for the car's most important electrical functions, but can cause issues with accessories such as power seats. An alternator problem could also cause problems with your headlights. When headlights act erratically, it can create a significant safety hazard if you have to drive at night on roads that aren't lit up by street lamps. Another way a bad alternator could jeopardize your safety is if not enough power is getting directed to your spark plugs and your vehicle then stalls out while you're in traffic.
